These are the assignments to be completed by 8th grade students during the second quarter of the school year. When updating their ePortfolio sites, students need to make sure that their writing is interesting to read and appropriate for their grade level. All grammar and spelling should be correct and should be at least a paragraph in length, unless told otherwise. Many of these assignments could be completed at home, if needed. Student will need Internet access and may need access to the programs listed below in order to complete the assignments.
In order to transfer completed work between home and school, the student would need access to the Internet and would need to log in to Edmodo and upload files to their library. Files uploaded to the student's library could then be downloaded to their computer at school and turned in for grading.
Assignment Description

Ignition
Students will complete modules in Ignition to review Digital Literacy and Responsibilities. This program is divided into 7 modules covering topics including: Digital footprint, Secure identity, Cyberbullying, Good texting practices, Conducting online research, Digital time management, Creating multimedia products, and Careers in technology. In addition to the paragraph for each module, the student can include the badge that they earned for completing the module; this is optional but will add to the visual look of the Google Site post and increase the student's grade.
Choosing a Computer
Student will complete the Choosing a Computer module of Ignition and pass the post assessment.
Student will add a post to their Google Site in the 2nd Quarter for Ignition.
The initial post should include an introduction to Ignition including a text link to the information page about Ignition and then should have a paragraph for Choosing a Computer which briefly describes what was learned in the module and answers the following questions:
What do you think the most important features are that people should consider before buying a computer and why?
What software do you consider essential to have on a computer and why?
What is cloud computing, and what does it enable us to do? What kinds of things do you store "in the cloud"?
What do you predict computers will be like 20 years from now?
Wireless Communication
Student will complete the Wireless Communication module of Ignition and pass the post assessment.
Student will add a paragraph for Wireless Communication to the Ignition post on their Google Sitewhich briefly describes what was learned in the module and answers the following questions:
How can people be more responsible with using and paying for their cellphones?
What are the dangers of using a cellphone while driving?
What can people do (drivers and passengers) to prevent texting while driving?
The Viral World
Student will complete the Viral World module of Ignition and pass the post assessment.
Student will add a paragraph for The Viral World to the Ignition post on their Google Site which briefly describes what was learned in the module and answers the following questions:
What kinds of risks can come with using technology and how can people reduce those risks, especially when it comes to protecting their privacy and online identities?
What signs might indicate that someone is overusing technology?
How can people keep their technology use in check?
Internet Resources and Credibility
Student will complete the Internet Resources and Credibility module of Ignition and pass the post assessment.
Student will add a paragraph for Internet Resources and Credibility to the Ignition post on their Google Site which briefly describes what was learned in the module and answers the following questions:
What does it mean to plagiarize, and what are some ways that people can make sure they are NOT plagiarizing?
What are the consequences of plagiarism?
How do you use technology in our schoolwork? When does technology use cause a problem in school?
Creating Multimedia Products
Student will complete the Creating Multimedia Products module of Ignition and pass the post assessment.
Student will add a paragraph for Creating Multimedia Products to the Ignition post on their Google Site which briefly describes what was learned in the module and answers the following questions:
How can technology help people to be creative and express their ideas?
What have you done with technology to be creative and express your ideas? (no links, please)
Why do people need to be careful about what they share or post online?
What is the purpose of copyright and what are some examples of copyright infringement?
Digital Relationships and Respect
Student will complete the Digital Relationships and Respect module of Ignition and pass the post assessment.
Student will add a paragraph for Digital Relationships and Respect to the Ignition post on their Google Site which briefly describes what was learned in the module and answers the following questions:
What is cyberbullying and how is it different than regular bullying?
What should someone do if they are cyberbullied?
What can you do if someone you know is being cyberbullied?
How can people your age help to put an end to cyberbullying?
The Future of Technology and You
Student will complete the Future of Technology module of Ignition and pass the post assessment.
Student will add a paragraph for The Future of Technology and You to the Ignition post on their Google Site which briefly describes what was learned in the module and answers the following questions:
What is STEM?
What are some STEM careers and why are they important?
What are some jobs that have been created because of technology?
If you wanted to get a job in technology in the future, what could you be doing now to help plan for that?
My Digital Life
Student will add a wrap up paragraph to the Ignition post on their Google Site with their reflections on Ignition. The reflection is the most important part of this assignment and needs to include:
Which module (or modules) they liked the best and why.
What they feel was the most valuable module (or modules) and why.
How what they learned from Ignition may change how they use technology in the future or if it won't change anything, why it won't.
The student's Ignition certified badge.
Optional: Student will complete the My Digital Life Simulation in Ignition.
How to Turn In: Student will turn in the link to their Google Site post on Edmodo.
How this is Graded: Student will receive a grade for each of the quizzes (10 points each) at the end of each module. Student will also receive a grade (150 points) for the Ignition post on their Google Site.
